My name is Tracey Daniels and I made a decision to start my own dry cleaning business in Clevedon, N. Somerset, after being made redundant as a manager with Johnson the Cleaners in August 2012, after almost twenty years of service.

Inadvertently, I have clocked up 32 years of experience, in laundry and dry cleaning, starting as a “calendar girl” with Initial laundries in 1981. It was only meant to be a gap year, but I loved the people and the atmosphere so much I stayed there until redundancy forced me to leave in 1985. A calendar by the way is a large set of rollers that press out and dry sheets and tablecloths, so nothing as glamorous as a real calendar girl, although you were both hot and steamy, but for totally different reasons.

I left the cleaning industry for a while and entered the shoe making trade, G B Britton in Kingswood to be exact where I put eyelets in work boots until I left in 1988 to have my first child.

After a year at home with my son, I found it necessary again to go in search of part time employment. This time in a local family run dry cleaners, where I was taught to press clothing to a very high standard by a lovely couple Alan and Diane Ball. I left in 1992 to have my second child. I did return to their employ briefly, but left to join Bollom Dry Cleaners on Feb 8th 1993 with the prospect of less money, but four weeks a year paid holiday. In 1997 Bollom changed their name to Johnson dry cleaners. I must have liked working for the company, because I stayed with them for nearly 20 years. I worked my way up from part time presser/dry cleaner to becoming the manager of what was to become one of their busiest stores on whiteladies road in 2000 until 2005. I then managed Johnson shops in Portishead, Clifton Village and finally Clevedon until redundancy August 2012

Destiny or chance?

A-Y-S Dry cleaning was founded.
